Museo Judío de Estambul ( Fundación 500 años)- The Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews

La historia de los sefardíes en el Imperio Otomano se prolonga desde hace más de cinco siglos, cuando llegaron tras haber sido expulsados por los Reyes Católicos del que era su hogar, la Península Ibérica. Los sefardíes pronto se integraron en la vida de la capital del imperio hasta sentirse parte del lugar, como lo habían sido antiguamente de España.Aunque han pasado cinco siglos, y la comunidad se ha reducido en gran medida debido a las migraciones del siglo XX, aún conservan gran parte de ese legado que trajeron de su vida en la península ibérica.

La fundación de los 500 años se creó en 1992 para conmemorar el quinientos aniversario de su llegada a estas tierras, y  el museo está alojado en la Sinagoga Zulfaris, escondida en un pequeño y anónimo callejón del histórico barrio de Gálata. La sinagoga, como muchas de la ciudad, cayó en desuso a medida que la población sefardí emigraba, pero fue rescatada del olvido y utilizada para albergar el museo. Aunque el interior no sea excesivamente grande, es suficiente para explicar la historia de los judíos sefardíes desde que huyeron de España hasta el presente a través de objetos, fotografías, y textos.

The story of Sephardic in Ottoman Empire comes back in time more than 5 centuries ago,when they arrived, after being expelled from the Iberian Peninsula by the Catholic Kings.The Sephardic community soon got integrated into the Empire capitalʼs life so they felt part of it as they were in Spain before.

Although it has been five centuries already and the community reduced drastically by the 20th century migrations, they keep still great part of the legacy they brought with them from their life in the Iberian Peninsula.

The 500 years Foundation was created in 1992 to commemorate de 500th anniversary of their arrival to this land. There is a museum in the Zulfaris synagogue, hidden in a small and anonymous street of the historical neighborhood of Galata. The synagogue, as many others spread along the city, died out while Sephardic population migrated out of Istanbul, but it was rescued from oblivion and used to hold the museum. Although the inside isn’t so big, it’s sufficient to explain the history of the sephardic jewish since the exodus from Spain until the present times through objects, photographs and texts.

La gentrificación de Tarlabaşı - The gentrification of Tarlabaşı

El histórico barrio de Tarlabaşı se halla situado en el corazón de la Estambul europea, a un paso de la conocida plaza de Taksim. En sus origenes y hasta los años 50 los residentes de Tarlabaşı fueron en su mayoria familias griegas y armenias, pero los pogromos (disturbios) que azotaron Estambul en el 1955 aceleraron la emigración de los griegos étnicos ( rum) de Estambul. El desarrollo de la industria y la creciente demanda de mano de obra provocó la llegada de campesinos de la Anatolia a la ciudad, que se asentaron en el barrio y ocuparon las casas abandonadas por las minorias cristianas. En los años 90 el conflicto kurdo-turco provocó la llegada de una segunda oleada de población, en este caso kurda, buscando un lugar barato donde asentarse y empezar una vida nueva.

Pero Tarlabaşı ha sido una de las útimas victimas de los proyectos urbanos de gentrificación que azotan a esta gran metrópolis, provocando el desplazamiento forzoso de gran parte de sus residentes a los suburbios.

Parece ser que la historia se repite, y los residentes de este barrio están condenados a marcharse de aqui, aunque esta vez no son las turbas exaltadas quienes los expulsan sino que es el gobierno con sus política neoliberalista quien les obliga a dejar el lugar.

The historic district of Tarlabaşı is located in the heart of the European Istanbul , a short walk from the famous Taksim Square . In its origins and until the 50s the residents of Tarlabaşı were mostly Greek and Armenian families , but the pogroms ( riots ) that hit Istanbul in 1955 accelerated the emigration of the ethnic Greeks (rum ) of Istanbul. The development of the industry and the growing demand for labor hand meant the arrival of peasants from Anatolia into the city , who settled in the neighborhood and occupied the houses abandoned by the Christian minorities . In the 90s the Turkish- Kurdish conflict caused the arrival of a second wave of population, in this case Kurdish , looking for a cheap place to settle down and start a new life .

But Tarlabaşı has been one of the lattest  victims of the urban gentrification projects that plague this great metropolis , causing the forced displacement of many of its residents into the suburbs.

It seems that history repeats itself , and the residents of this neighborhood are bound to leave , but this time there aren't the exalted mobs who expel them, it is the government with its neoliberal policy who is forcing them to leave.

Fener -Balat- Ayvansaray

Descubre una de las zonas donde aún se puede palpar el rico pasado cosmopolita de la época otomana. Pasearemos por el antiguo barrio de Fener,  donde residian los griegos, el barrio judío de Balat donde también residieron armenios y Ayvansaray, junto a las antiguas murallas de la ciudad, y nos perderemos poe sus pintorescas calles donde habita una de las mayores comunidades gitanas de Estambul

Discover some of the places where you still can feel  the cosmopolitan past of the ottoman times.We will walk through the old quarter of Fener, that became home to many of the Greeks in the city after the fall of Constantinople; the jewish quarter of Balat, also inhabited by armenians, and Ayvansaray, next to the old city walls, and we'll enjoy getting lost in the picturesque streets inhabited by one of the largest Roma communities in Istanbul

Esta caminata consiste en una visita a las entrañas del Gran Bazar y del Mercado egipcio ( de las especias) donde podrás disfrutar de la oportunidad de charlar con los vendedores y observar este mundo de comerciantes desde dentro.

Además pasearemos por las calles adyacentes a los bazares, también comerciales, y visitaremos  algunos antiguos caravasares ( hans) donde en la antiguedad los comerciantes que llegaban a Estambul depositaban sus mercancías y recibian alojamiento gratuito. Hoy en día muchos de estos caravasares se encuentran en un estado decadente, parte de ellos en desuso y otras partes ocupadas por talleres o almacenes; pero la decadencia que destilan sus viejos muros nos transportan en el tiempo a una época en la que gozaron de todo su esplendor.

This walk starts with a visit to the bowels of the Grand Bazaar and the egiptian market ( spices market) where you can have the chance of chatting with the sellers and enjoy this merchant's world from the inside. We will also visit  the adjacent streets, also commercial, and some old caravanserais ( hans) on the way. This  hans were used  as a hotel for the traveling merchants but also to store their goods and animals, although nowadays most of them are derelict and used for other purposes.
